AGRIshelter is a prototype for self-built housing in emergency situations. especially the dramatic question of refugees in the world. The idea of the project is to help integrate socially and economically the people who will build it, giving them skill in construction and chance to grow and sell food.
To complete the prototype we need funding to pay for wood products, transportation, labour and incidental costs. The idea is to mass produce the model and lower its cost in the future.
AGRIshelter uses a combination of prefabricated components mostly in wood shipped to the site that can be easily assembled by untrained people with local materials as infill. The innovation compared to other refugee shelter is to make temporary housing completely of biodegradable building materials from agricultural production such as straw bales and wood that is ecologically responsible and can be recycled.
AGRIshelter also challenges the notion of how refugees or people in emergency situation should live, providing both an urban community with agricultural activity.
The prototype will be built very soon within the next month in Milan next to a refugee reception center with whom we are working and our partner agency Forum Cooperazione e Tecnologia is helping in creating a cooperative economic program.
