7 Ways Technology Is Changing Way of Business Communication

Technology has significantly changed how we communicate today. It started with the telephone replacing the telegraph machine and now the telephone is being replaced by cell phones and Internet communication. Society is embracing these changes even though it's changing the way we do business today.

How Online Communication has Changed the Business World Today

One of the major changes in business communication is in the form of online communication. This happens in several ways today, including:

    • Email messages are replacing handwritten correspondence today. Businesses are now using email for both internal communication and talking to their customers as well. While co-workers send email messages to get quick responses about projects they're working on, they can also send email to customers when longer conversations or more time are necessary. According to Small Business, the best part about communicating this way is that you save money on postage since it's easy to get a free email account from providers such as Google or Yahoo today.
    • Social networking on sites like Facebook and Instagram allow you to easily communicate with people you already know and make new connections with people you may not otherwise meet. You can then share information and photos with these people regardless of where they're located or the time of day or night it is. This works better for businesses because they can conduct business in this way almost instantaneously instead of having their customers wait for communications to arrive in the postal mail. Additionally, using social networking sites is a great way of reconnecting with customers you may have lost touch with. Regardless of how your business uses it, social media websites enhance your business' online presence and increase its revenue. At the same time, if you get a bad review on a site like Yelp, it can decrease your business' revenue. This is why it's so important that you don't have “bad press” created about your business. Once this happens, it will make the rounds regardless of how proactive you are.
    • Most social media networks also offer online chat capabilities. This is a great way of talking to someone you meet on the site before deciding whether you want to give them your phone number or exchange email addresses.
    • Online chat forums are slowly dying out, but you still shouldn't allow your business to overlook them today. These are still a great way to talk about your business' products and services to people around the world in real-time without ever needing to use the telephone to do so.

How Websites Have Changed the Business World Today

Websites are also changing the business world today. This has made it so that everyone can work at any time of the day or night, regardless of where in the world they're located. Nobody has any down time or even a vacation anymore. However, you can't avoid this if you want to run a successful business. In fact, there are two essential parts of a website that need your continuous attention. These include:

    • Blogs have grown in popularity since they first came on the scene in 1994. Today, businesses use blogs for promoting their products and services. They are a great way of teaching your customers about what your business does, how to use your products or services, and why they need these things for their business operations. Your business can also benefit from those who make their living off of blogging. These people help businesses with more promotion while making money for themselves through advertisement-based revenue.
    • A website is something every business needs today as well. Businesses simply can't survive in a vacuum, without any online presence. This adds another part to every business because now you also have to worry about protecting your website's reputation, not just the reputation your business has in your neighborhood. Offering satisfactory customer service and products or services is no longer enough. Your offerings must now be superior. According to App Data Room, “what happens on the Internet, stays on the Internet,” which means that if you earn a bad reputation, you can't shake it off easily. As such, you should hire a community manager to take care of your website and worry about its digital footprint today.

How Phones Have Changed the Business World Today

It's not just the online world that's changed the way we do business today. Our phones have also changed things for the better. Some of the ways in which this has occurred include:

    • Video calls are easy to make thanks to providers such as Skype and Yahoo Messenger. With video conferencing all you need is an Internet connection and a computer to see who you're talking to despite how far away you are from one another. This is also a great way of saving money too, since you're not paying for travel and accommodations.
    • Cell phones are much more portable today. It's as if you're carrying a small computer in your pocket now so you can stay connected wherever you're at through email, voice calls, social networks, and text messages. Some of today's cell phones also allow you to place video calls.

These various tools help you stay connected with your business, regardless of anything else that's occurring in your life. While Millenials drive most of these changes, this makes a lot of sense considering that in just a few years they'll make up more than half of America's workforce and spend the most money in the economy as well. This is a larger segment of the population that the Baby Boomers. However, what's more important is their desire to stay continually in touch without sacrificing anything. As such, we can expect even further technological advances in the near future.

App Data Room says that these changes are for the best because their analytics tell businesses exactly what their customers want or need. From there these businesses can create groups whom they're able to target in specific ways. As businesses refine their approaches, processes, and offerings, businesses receive a better return on investment (ROI).
